Well Visits

We provide comprehensive annual well visits to children from infancy up to 18 years of age. A well visit is an essential preventative procedure that provides an evaluation of your child’s current state of health, identifies any potential health problems in its early stages, and guides you in making the right choices for your child’s health and wellness. Your child’s well visit will include a physical examination and the documentation of your child’s vital signs and measurements (age, height, weight, etc), age appropriate developmental and behavioral evaluation, standard and recommended screenings, and advice for promoting your child’s physical and emotional vitality.

School, Sports, Camp, & Preoperative Physicals

Physicals are usually required to ensure that your child is healthy enough to participate safely in school, sports, and camp activities. Specific requirements may vary, but all physicals will include a standard examination (ears, nose, throat, heart and lungs, abdomen, etc), a medical history review, a vision check, and measurement of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc). In contrast, a preoperative physical would be requested by a surgeon to determine that your child is well enough to undergo anesthesia and surgery. This type of physical would include the general physical exam, cardiac and lung function evaluation, assessment of medical history, and the relevant lab tests as specified by the surgeon. We strongly recommend that you schedule your child’s physical at least a few weeks in advance to ensure that you have enough time to address possible medical issues. Please be sure that you bring and fill out all the required forms (from the school, camp, or other institution) and have your child’s vaccine and medical records ready. Call us at (515) 349-1820 today to schedule an appointment.

Acute Care & Sick Visits

We accept sick visits for all children from the age of infancy to 18 years. Our office can treat all non-emergency acute illnesses and injuries, such as skin infections, the cold and flu, mild sprains, and much more. While these conditions are not life threatening, they may require immediate attention in certain situations. If this is the case, we recommend that you call our office during regular operating hours to see if accommodations can be made for your child.

Age-Appropriate Medical Screenings

Regular medical screenings are an excellent tool for safeguarding your child’s health and well-being. These screenings are crucial for detecting early signs of disease and for empowering parents and doctors in providing timely treatment. The following screens are available to children of all ages and can be conducted during their well visit as needed: anemia, lead exposure, cholesterol, tuberculosis, and oral health. Additional screens for STDs and HIV may be suggested for at-risk adolescents (11 to 18 years).

Vision Screenings

Routine vision tests are usually performed during your child’s annual well visit. However, they can be conducted as a separate appointment or during a sick visit if your child is experiencing any symptoms related to vision. Call our office to reserve your screening appointment.
